Proposed Action Items to Reorient This Subreddit Toward FatFIRE

Introduction
This post is intended to be blunt and candid. Since October 2019, our FatFIRE community has expanded from about 50,000 subscribers to well over 160,000. A significant portion of new members are not aligned with FatFIRE goals and may never reach FatFIRE in their lifetimes, aside from unlikely lottery luck. It’s time to assess the sub’s direction and quality of discussion.

Why a surge of newcomers can hinder the sub
– It shifts the focus of discussions away from FatFIRE principles.
– Contributions can become irrelevant or of lower practical value.
– Upvotes and downvotes may amplify posts or ideas that conflict with FatFIRE goals.
– There is a higher incidence of posts that resemble “LDAR” (lightly actionable, aspirational, or unrealistic content).

The pace of decline in discussion quality over the past six months is concerning. Messages from those earning modest incomes (e.g., $50k–$100k) often do not reflect the economic realities or priorities of FatFIRE. While aspiration toward wealth is universal, this space should remain dedicated to FatFIRE planning and achievement, rather than broader FIRE discussions. For more general FIRE content, other subreddits address those audiences.

Illustrative examples of content that has gained traction here but does not fit FatFIRE
– Posts suggesting there is little difference in quality of life after certain high net worth milestones (e.g., after achieving 2–3 million, paying off a home, etc.) lack a correct understanding of purchasing power and lifestyle realities at extreme wealth levels.
– Posts claiming FatFIRE is not a viable path, or that substantial savings are insufficient, tend to receive disproportionate upvotes despite misalignment with the sub’s intent.
– Remarks pressuring newcomers to leave FatFIRE discussions or suggesting others do not belong here illustrate dilution of the sub’s focus and echo concerns from similar FIRE communities.

What kind of content should be more prevalent
– Posts that offer frank, practical insights from professionals or experienced FatFIRE builders (e.g., wealth advisors with applicable, high-net-worth perspectives).
– Content centered on credible paths toward FatFIRE rather than chasing milestone numbers (e.g., “Can you actually retire at a specific figure?” rather than “I just hit X milestone”).

Proposed action items
1) Enforce strict bans for off-topic content
– This sub should clearly deter content that is not FatFIRE-related or that undermines the sub’s purpose.
– Examples of disqualifying content include posts from users who are clearly far from FatFIRE or whose contributions do not add value to FatFIRE discussions.
– A permanent ban is ideal; temporary suspensions could be a pragmatic first step.

2) Stop bending the rules to promote popular but off-topic posts
– Don’t enable a pattern where popular but off-topic content remains due to upvotes.
– Do not lock controversial posts; instead remove them and consider banning the offenders, temporarily or permanently, to preserve focus.

3) Increase reporting and moderation collaboration
– The moderation team has done commendable work; user reporting is essential to maintaining quality.
– Encourage community members to flag content that is clearly anti-FatFIRE or irrelevant.

Closing thoughts
This perspective is partly inspired by previous discussions about online behavior and community focus. While it’s important to welcome diverse views, the sub should uphold a higher standard of relevance and quality aligned with FatFIRE objectives. I’m open to feedback from the FatFIRE community, including additional moderation considerations, and I remain committed to improving the discussion environment. If needed, I’m prepared to adjust my participation level to support a healthier, more productive subreddits dynamics.
